Has anyone compared pdfsam vs pdfgear for merging and splitting big PDF files?

I often need to merge and split large PDFs, sometimes 200+ page scans, and I’m stuck choosing between pdfsam and pdfgear. Has anyone used both and can say which one handles big files faster?

had the same thing last month with some big scan files for a planner pack. tbh i never used pdfsam or pdfgear so i can’t compare speed. i just drag pages around in preview on my mac. 200 pages is slow but it works and i already have it. fwiw no extra programs for me.

Big scan files are definitely a pain to deal with. I haven’t used either of those, but for massive construction drawings I just use PDFcap instead. You just drag your files onto the page, hit the merge or split button, and it does the job incredibly fast. It also compresses everything automatically, which saves me so much headache with email limits.

I’ve found PDFsam Basic more predictable for 200+ page merge/split jobs, while PDFgear is easier if you also need editing. Speed mostly depends on scan size and disk speed, so use a local SSD and test the same file in both. Avoid online merging for scans containing personal information.
