Does anyone know what pdf editor is actually free?

I need to fix a few typos in a 12-page PDF on my work laptop, where I can’t install anything, and every free trial wants a card. Does a genuinely free PDF editor exist?

had the same thing last month. i just open the pdf in word, fix the typos, then save as pdf again. layout held up ok on a simple file like that. tbh thats what i do for my own planner printables when i catch a mistake.

Sejda’s browser editor is genuinely free for a 12-page file and can edit existing text, though it has daily limits. Keep a backup first. If the PDF contains confidential work information, don’t upload it to any website; ask IT for an approved tool or edit the source document instead.

If the PDF has selectable text and isn’t locked, try opening it in Microsoft Edge first, though it only handles comments and simple markup. For actual text changes without installing anything, LibreOffice Draw is my usual free option, but that won’t help on a locked-down work laptop. Could you use an approved browser-based tool, or does your workplace block uploads too?

Yeah, for no-install situations I usually point people to PDF24 or Sejda, both run right in the browser and let you edit text for free. Sejda has a daily limit on the free tier but a 12 page typo fix should fit fine. At the help desk I see this question like twice a week lol. Just double check your work is ok with uploading docs to a random site first.

I run into this with menu PDFs at work. LibreOffice Draw can edit some PDFs for free if it’s already installed; otherwise I’d try a browser-based editor for the typo, then save a copy and check the formatting before sending it on.

If you’ve got a work laptop, check if you have Word on it, it can open PDFs and let you edit text directly then re-save as PDF. Works fine for small typo fixes.

  1. Do keep a backup copy of the original before you let Word mangle the layout.
  2. Don’t bother if the PDF is heavily designed, Word will wreck the formatting, you’re better off just annotating in that case.

It is incredibly frustrating when those free trials ambush you for a credit card. I handle site reports on a locked work laptop all the time, so I know the struggle. Just use PDFcap in your web browser since it requires no installation. You just upload the file, click the text you want to edit, make your changes, and hit save.

@guitar_fan Good call on keeping a backup, that is the part people skip. On a locked work laptop I would ask IT before uploading anything, even a free browser tool. Does your workplace have an approved editor?

@amy_celtic honestly opening it in word is what i do at work all the time when a doctor catches a typo. it can mess up the margins a bit, not sure if it’s the same on mac, but for fixing a couple words it’s so much easier than fighting with permissions.
