My class assignment PDF is way over the upload limit and I have no idea what compressing it actually does to the file or if it will ruin the formatting.

had the same thing last month with a checklist pdf that was too big for my shop. compressing a pdf just shrinks it so it fits the limit by making images smaller and cleaning extra data. my layouts and fonts never broke, tbh only photos lost a little sharpness if i overdid it. fwiw i just re-exported from the program i already use.

It is super annoying when school upload limits are so small. Compressing usually just lowers the resolution of images so the file takes up less space, which I do constantly with heavy construction drawings. The text and formatting stay exactly the same if you use PDFcap. I just upload my documents there and click the compress button to shrink them down.

Compressing a PDF usually reduces the size of embedded images, removes unused data, or changes how the file is stored. Normal text and page layout should stay the same, but photos, scans, and screenshots can lose sharpness if you choose a strong setting. Keep the original, make a compressed copy, then open it and check every page before uploading. If it’s mostly scanned pages, reducing image resolution is usually where the biggest savings come from.

Compressing a PDF usually reduces image resolution and removes extra data, so the page layout and formatting should stay the same. Tip: save a copy, compress that, then check every page before uploading. Avoid using the strongest setting, since scanned text and diagrams can become blurry.

I’ve had this with menu PDFs full of photos. Compression mainly shrinks embedded images and removes extra file data, so the layout usually stays the same. Save a copy first, then compress and check each page, especially small text and diagrams.

Compressing mostly just shrinks the images inside your PDF, it drops thier resolution a bit so the file gets smaller. Your text and layout stay exactly the same, so formatting won’t get ruined. If the assignment is mostly scanned pages or photos, compression helps a ton. I run the “reduce file size” option in Acrobat at the help desk all the time, works fine for class uploads.

Compressing basically squashes the images inside your PDF (and sometimes font data) so the file is smaller, text and layout stay as they are.

1. Keep a backup of the original before you touch anything, scanned docs are murder to redo.
2. If it’s mostly scanned pages, try printing it to “Microsoft Print to PDF” at a lower resolution first, sometimes that alone gets you under the limit.

Avoid compressing it five times over hoping for a smaller file each time, quality drops fast and it gets blurry quick.
