I have a bunch of PDFs saved on my Windows laptop and often need to read them on flights with no Wi-Fi. Is there a free reader I can install once and then use completely offline?

had the same thing last month with a stack of pdfs on a flight. tbh i just open them in microsoft edge on windows, it’s already there and works completely offline. no extra install needed. you can even make it the default for pdfs if that helps.

SumatraPDF is free, lightweight, and works completely offline on Windows. Install it before the trip and test a file in airplane mode. Avoid readers that require an account or cloud upload if the PDFs are private.

SumatraPDF is a good lightweight choice for Windows and works entirely offline once installed. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free too, though it is heavier and occasionally pushes online features. For plain reading, searching, and printing, I’d install SumatraPDF and keep the PDFs stored locally rather than in a cloud-synced folder.

Yeah, pretty much any desktop reader works fully offline once it’s installed, the files are local anyway. I use Sumatra PDF at the help desk because it’s tiny and opens instantly, even on old machines. Adobe Acrobat Reader is the other obvious free option if you want commenting tools. Just grab either one, install it before your trip, and you’re set for the whole flight.

I’ve used SumatraPDF for this on my Windows laptop. It installs once, opens PDFs entirely offline, and is nice and quick for simple reading. Adobe Acrobat Reader also works offline after installation if you need more features.

On Windows you’ve already got one, the built in Edge browser opens PDFs offline no bother, no install needed. Tip: just double click the file. Thing to avoid: installing some random “free reader” that bundles toolbars you didn’t ask for.

Not having Wi-Fi on a flight makes opening some PDF tools super annoying when they demand a login. I review massive construction drawings offline all the time using just my web browser. Just right click your saved PDF file, select “Open with”, and pick Chrome or Edge. It works perfectly as a free reader and you do not need to install anything else.

@helen_wallabies I do the same with Edge for my tax documents. It works offline and keeps the files on the laptop, which is what I want. Did you make sure that folder is not synced to any cloud?
