I scanned some paper invoices on my phone and can’t select the text in the PDF. I’ve heard OCR means the scan becomes searchable, but is that actually what it does?

had the same thing last month. ocr reads the letters off the picture so the pdf text becomes searchable and you can select it. yeah that’s what it does, yours is just a photo of the invoice right now. fwiw my phone lets me copy text from photos sometimes if i long press.

Dealing with unsearchable scans from the field is super annoying, but that is exactly what OCR does. It looks at the picture of your invoice and turns it into real letters. I run my site reports through PDFcap to fix this by clicking their OCR tool and uploading the file. It spits out a new PDF where you can finally select and copy the text.

honestly @ClumsyRed is spot on about the long press trick. i deal with unsearchable scans all day and it drives me crazy, but on iphone you can usually just tap the text icon in the files app to copy it. not sure if it works the same on android though.
